Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Don’t Judge a Book By It’s Cover-On Second Thought Do

March 20, 2009

Dr. Constantinides has had the honor of being a Guest Editor for a book on Cosmetic Rhinoplasty, published in the quarterly series Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America by W.B. Saunders. It can be found if you go to www.facialplastic.theclinics.com. This is the current Volume 17 Book Number 1. Below is the Preface to the book written by Dr. Constantinides. We hope that you get a better sense of who Dr. C is and how much passion he has for rhinoplasty:

“Rhinoplasty has evolved more quickly over the last ten years than in any other time of the last one hundred years. Breakthrough to this evolution has been the open technique, where the entire structure of the nose can be inspected accurately and favorably distorted to effect maximal cosmetic and functional change. Today, the operated-upon nose can be stronger and more stable over years than the virgin nose. Minimal excisions of cartilage coupled with adding additional cartilaginous support from septum, ear and rib have allowed unprecedented change, truly allowing plasticity in the result.

The feuds between egos of the past, trading progress in knowledge for divided camps of thought, have been largely supplanted by collegial exchanges of information among disciples of rhinoplasty. It is common today to see plastic surgeons and facial plastic surgeons put aside divisive instincts to share a common stage, furthering exchange of knowledge at unprecedented rates.

Despite all the knowledge that experience has given the field, there is much to still learn. The challenge is to never be complacent and content with our results, but to continue being self-critical and ever-examining our thinking and skills. Technological advances promise amazing horizons of new tissue engineering techniques, further expanding what we will be able to achieve surgically.

In this issue of Clinics are assembled some of the best minds in rhinoplasty today. Some are widely recognized as leaders in the field, while others are the emerging next generation that will break new ground in the future. All have already made a tremendous contribution to our field. Enjoy what they have to teach.

Minas Constantinides, M.D., F.A.C.S.
New York, NY

In addition to being the overall editor for the book, Dr. Constantinides discusses rhinoplasty techniques and shares his ideas on what it takes to make the consultation process a successful one for his patients. This enables his colleagues to gain a better perspective on how he incorporates multiple theories regarding business, medical, and psychological components to provide an all around experience for patients, their families, and physicians themselves. This enables them to make informed decisions regarding appropriate treatment options.
Dr. C provides a very unique and thorough consultation experience for patients. He feels that getting to know you not only as a patient but as a person and asking what you want and expect from him is how to get the best results from not only your consultation but from your procedures as well.
Dr. Constantinides welcomes questions and comments to this or any of our other entries that are posted on our website.

Turn Up Your Radio

We are happy to report that Dr. Constantinides has been on the radio twice this week. On Sunday March 8th he was interviewed for BlogTalkRadio, the world’s first social radio network. BlogTalk allows listeners to connect with the guest speakers through free, live, call-in talk shows with unlimited participants. The interviewer for the talk show was Kristy G. and the title of the show for the evening was “Surviving Physical and Sexual Assault.”
The topic that Dr. Constantinides was asked to discuss was his work with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s pro bono program, Face to Face. The Face to Face Program has taken some 34, 500 telephone calls on its 1-800 number and the physicians that participate in the program have seen over 2500 patients nationwide. Some of the questions that were directed to Dr. Constantinides were about the program itself. What does it offer? How did it come to pass within the academy? Who qualifies? How does someone reach out to the doctor? All of these questions and answers Dr. C is very familiar with since he was previously the Chairman of Face to Face and is still very active in providing services to victims of domestic violence.
Dr. C also had a guest contributor on the show, Brandy Elias. As some of you know, Brandy came to Dr. C through the Face to Face Program. She was asked to give her story to listeners and to describe how the Face to Face program changed her life.
On Wednesday March 11th Dr. Constantinides had the pleasure of being on Doctor Radio, a Sirius Satellite radio station found on Channel 114/XM 119 created exclusively by the NYU Langone Medical Center. The topic was Face to Face and his work with domestic violence patients. Brandy’s case was discussed briefly as well as his previous work with Roshauna Tate. Dr. C is very passionate about his work with the AAFPRS and the Face to Face Program. The services that he and all of his colleagues provide to these patients are life changing and essential in helping them to start their lives anew. Doctor radio is heard by over 20 million listeners across the country.
