DR. MINAS CONSTANTINIDES: When patients come into the practice, they're often—come in for information about a specific procedure that we can do for them. But I think it’s really important to try to understand what is going on in a patient’s life and how plastic surgery can fit into that place.
So the first question that I ask the patient after sort of what is it that you’d really like to talk about today, I ask if we were going to meet here in one year, what would have to happen in that year for you to be really satisfied with not only what we're talking about, but also with your progress in the rest of your life?
And the answers to that question really help me to understand how a patient’s life is going and what they—how plastic surgery can fit into their lives. Often patients have been thinking about procedures for a long time, many years.
Most of my patients who come in to discuss rhinoplasty, or surgery of the nose, have been thinking about rhinoplasty for many, many years. And now, for whatever reason, it’s the right time to think that they can fit this into their lives.
Well what’s kept them all these years from going forward? Usually it’s fear. It’s a fear of something, a fear of looking overdone or a fear of anesthesia or a fear of not knowing how they're going to fit this into the rest of their life.
How are they going to recover from this? What are they going to tell their colleagues or their friends about having had plastic surgery? And so we spend a lot of time talking about that, about how they can have the surgery and get beyond their fears so that they can make a really positive decision for themselves.
And so the consultation process is actually a fairly detailed one. It’s not a quick ten minute hi how are you? This is what I can do for you. It really—we try to explore the entire life of our patients.
And in that way, I think I can be a better doctor for them. And I think that I can help them figure out what—how this whole thing can work for them in their own life.
