NOW PLAYING: Acheiving Balance

DR. MINAS CONSTANTINIDES: When I see a patient in my practice who wants to talk about a particular feature, let’s take rhinoplasty with the nose. They often are focused on the nose and know that’s something’s wrong with it.

Either it’s too big or too wide or crooked or something like that. But what I like to look at is really the whole face and how does that feature, that nose, fit into the whole face?

If you take a long nose and put it on a short face, things don’t look proportionate. It can make a little, a small face look longer or bigger. And so achieving balance in the face is really important.

We don’t just look at the nose. We look at the length of the forehead, the hairline, the width of the cheeks, and how big or small the chin is. And we have a discussion about how we can achieve balance overall in the face.

Many people know that chin implants or changing the chin position can affect the way the nose looks too. It’s really hard to picture. What is that—how does that all work? If we make the nose smaller and we make the chin bigger, how is that going to really look?

Is it going to make me feel like I’m still myself or not? Photo imaging is really an important part of the consultation process because it helps to answer those questions very, very clearly.

We don’t have to worry about guessing how big a nose or how small a nose we want to create or how big or small a chin or what do we do with some other feature because we can image it on the computer.

And we'll know very exactly how everything fits. And most importantly, we'll know if the eyes look better or not because successful surgery always has to mean that the eyes look better.
