DR. MINAS CONSTANTINIDES: One of the surgeries that I really love doing is autoplasty. Autoplasty is an operation where the ear can be reshaped if it’s overly prominent or congenitally malformed.

Now we're not talking about children here with ears that are very, very malformed, but rather, otherwise normal looking kids with, you know, ears that are a little bit too prominent.

They stick out too much. If you have prominent ears yourself, then there’s a 25% chance that your children will have prominent ears. And if you and your husband both do, well then it’s very, very likely.

Now you may not have been teased or had any problem with your ears when you were growing up. But sometimes children have that. Or if you’d like to see a little bit of improvement for your child, prominent ears can be improved dramatically.

I sometimes even do this surgery in teenagers and adults. Teenagers mostly become performers and have to wear their hair back either as dancers or on stage, and they just don’t look good with their prominent ears.

So we can do surgery to reorient those ears, really pin them back, if you will, but at the same time reshape them so that the natural curves are enhanced so that they don’t have we can rebuild and create them.
